Here at Watkins Wright hairdressing, our aim is to ‘enhance your image with a unique experience’ by providing top quality styling, cutting and colouring.
Excellence is a journey and not a destination and to this aim we are constantly training all our staff to high standards of excellence in hairdressing and customer care, across our five branches in Thirsk, Knaresborough, Great Ayton, Boroughbridge and Kirkbymoorside.
When setting up my business in 1988, having worked in a large town, I realised that many of the clients who came into the salon actually lived in the small towns and villages on the outskirts. I realised that they would travel into town and a large part of their day would be taken up with coming to have their hair done. It made sense to me to actually set up in smaller towns and villages so clients didn’t have to travel. I decided to bring the skills I had learnt, the standards and the mindset of a city salon out into the smaller towns and villages.
I have always been passionate about training, and to be successful the staff have to be trained to the highest standard so we train our junior staff, newly qualified staff and any new starters weekly. We then close all our five salons for a day approx every 8 weeks and bring in a trainer to train and teach new skills to all our staff. Over the years we have had some of the top hairdressers in the country with awards such as ‘British Hairdresser of the Year’, ‘North East Hairdresser of the Year’, ‘Scottish Hairdresser of the Year,’ ‘Midlands Hairdresser of the Year’ and ‘North West Hairdresser of the Year’ to carry out this training.
I have also been a finalist (down to the last 6) in the ‘British Hairdressing Awards’ on four occasions, the latest of which is this year, 2015. I have also won ‘Image of the Year’, a national competition. We have also been finalists in many other competitions, with my latest achievement being a finalist in the AIPP (Association International Professional Coiffure) which is an association that assembles 72 professional hairdressing publications from 36 countries around the world. With 647 entries from around the globe, I’m down to the final 20 in my category up against countries such as USA, Australia, South Africa, Spain Germany and many others.
Over the 27 years in business, we have also raised tens of thousands of pounds for lots of different local and national charities and we have also held lots of shows, demonstrations and worked with many schemes to help encourage young people.
I am as passionate about our industry now as when setting up 27 years ago, and I’m looking forward to the next 27 years.
